Donald Kennedy was Stanford's eighth president, serving from 1980 to 1992. Prior to taking office he was vice president and provost under his predecessor Richard W. Lyman. Kennedy, holder of three degrees from Harvard, joined Stanford's biology faculty in 1960 and while on leave from 1977 to 1979 served in Washington, D.C., as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
